Phuket Beach Closed Because Of Jellyfish (June 2012)

The popular Nai Harn beach on Phuket has been closed for swimmers because of a jellyfish plague. It’s a special kind of jellyfish: bluebottle jellyfish. This jellyfish is dangerous to humans.

A common remedy for jellyfish stings is to rub vinegar on the affected area on the skin – but this is not recommended for bluebottles!

The bluebottle can’t move by itself, but instead just gets carried by the tide, so it is a matter of time till they will move on to another location and the beach can be reopened.
